“What happens when a haunted attraction goes wrong and the fear is real?!”

Ahhhh found footage horror.  This is a genre known all too well by horror fans as of late.  Over the past decade or so it has pretty much become a staple in the community ever since the flood gates were opened with the release of Paranormal Activity.  It could even go back further to the iconic film The Blair Witch Project.  Or, for the purists, we could trace it back to the Godfather of the genre with the cult classic Cannibal Holocaust!  The problem with found footage films is that since the release of these classics, pretty much everyone who can operate a camera thought they could make a horror movie.  However, true fans know that it’s not as easy as it looks.

Well, once in a while a true gem comes along that breathes new life back into this hit or miss trend.  In 2016, a little known film popped up on VOD formats that got everyone talking….. Hell House LLC!  Written and directed by Stephen Cognetti, this is found footage done the way it’s supposed to be! Winner of Best Paranormal Film at the Fear Fete Film Festival in October of 2015, it’s sure to send a chill down your spine.

THE PLOT

The film follows a traveling haunted attraction company called Hell House as they gear up for another Halloween season by setting up in an abandoned hotel just outside of New York.  Led by Alex (Danny Bellini), who is strongly business-minded and won’t settle for anything less than perfect execution.  The rest of the crew include his loyal and supportive girlfriend Sara (Ryan Jennifer Jones), jokester Paul (Gore Abrams), and his two technical prop guys Tony (Jared Hacker) and Andrew (Adam Schneider).

The film is a bit Tarantino-ish starting out 5 years after an apparent “malfunction” of the attraction, which resulted in tragedy.  A documentary crew led by Diane Graves (Alice Bahlke) tries to piece everything together and get down to the bottom of what happened that October night.  As she interviews local authorities and witnesses, it starts to become clear that more went on at that hotel than what has been revealed to the public.  Surprisingly, one of the survivors is Sara herself who agrees to let the documentary crew review all the footage taken from inside the hotel where Hell House was set up.  It’s here that all the questions are answered, and the truth about what happened is shockingly revealed!

SHOULD YOU SEE IT?

I can confidently say that this is one of the BEST found footage movies I’ve seen in a long time!  To say that it’s flawless may be a stretch, but it’s done expertly.  What makes it work so well is the setup.  We are immediately thrown into the chaos that transpired, and then we get to see how it all came to be.  This was perfect for keeping me engaged throughout.  The local interviews kept it interesting and made everything seem that much more real.  At times, I felt like I was actually watching a REAL documentary!

The entire cast was spot on with their performances, and being relatively unknown made their character development more effective.  The best part of this movie was the cinematography.  Many people complain about found footage films being too chaotic with the shaky camera technique, but in this instance it worked brilliantly!  The tension build up with that whole “what’s gonna pop up around the corner” approach was genius and because of the great acting and camera work, we only catch glimpses of the horror.  This movie is legitimately scary and never lets up all the way to the shocking conclusion! I can’t recommend this one enough, because it’s THAT good!  So, the next time you go through a haunted attraction during the Halloween season, this movie might make you think twice about whether or not you are a spectator or have become part of the haunt itself!

Lake Mungo

“A chilling look at the reality of family tragedy.”

When many people hear “Australia,” the first things that normally come to mind are crocs, snakes, spiders, outback, etc.  What many fail to realize is that the Australian people are also great filmmakers!  What they do best is reach the viewing audience on all levels.  Whether it’s extreme horror such as The Loved Ones and Wolf Creek, or the psychological dramas such as Snowtown and the more recent The Babadook, the Aussies know what they’re doing in the horror genre.

In 2008, a low budget indie film emerged and has been hailed as an instant cult classic in the found footage fan community.  This film is known as Lake Mungo.  Written and directed by Joel Anderson in his first full length feature, it made its way through various film festivals starting with South by Southwest in Austin, TX and the Traveling Film Fest Wagga Wagga in Australia, before being picked up by the After Dark Horrorfest in the U.S. resulting in mostly positive reviews.

THE PLOT

The film follows the Palmers, a local family of the city of Ararat.  Following the tragic drowning loss of the 16 year old daughter, Alice (Talia Zucker), the recount of the story is told through documented interviews with Alice’s parents Russell (David Pledger) and June (Rosie Traynor) and brother Mathew (Martin Sharpe) as well as local friends and co-workers.

Soon after Alice’s disappearance and her body’s eventual recovery, strange things begin to take place in the family’s home.  This leads Mathew to set up cameras in the hopes of capturing evidence that maybe Alice’s spirit is present.  As the family reviews the evidence, which leaving them with more questions than answers, they contact a local psychic named Ray Kemeny (Steve Jodrell) hoping for some sort of closure.  Soon, things get stranger and new evidence surfaces leaving everyone wondering what kind of secret life Alice may have been leading.  Now the Palmer family must take things into their own hands in order to solve the mystery of their beloved Alice, with the hopes that she will finally rest in peace.

Being a HUGE fan of paranormal found footage style films, it was a surprise to me that I had never heard of this gem of a film years ago.  Thanks to some reliable sources, I was encouraged to give it a view and am VERY glad I did!  It’s a very engaging and compelling film, to say the least.  Although not a film for everyone’s taste, it’s definitely one I would recommend to a fan of this genre of film. The acting is top notch, and the cinematography is excellent!

Even though I would call it more of a psychological drama than a straight up horror film, it does have some very well executed scenes of tension and dread that can leave the viewer emotionally drained by the time the credits start to roll. (By the way…be sure to watch through the credits for the added bonus). To get the full effect, I would give the same advice that I received: Turn off the lights, cut out all distractions, and really GIVE yourself to the film.  You won’t be disappointed.  Excellent film!

The Blair Witch Project

“Some legends are true…and better left unknown.”

When the term “found footage horror” is brought up, the first to do it was Cannibal Holocaust.  In 1999, a low budget independent film changed the face of cinema and reinvented “found footage” into modern day pop culture.  That movie is none other than The Blair Witch Project!  Shot entirely on hand-held cameras by the actors themselves and filmed on a very low budget, it became one of the highest grossing indie films of all time.  Co-written and co-directed by Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sanchez, it has become an instant cult classic and will go down as one of the scariest films of all time.  The plot is simple.  Three documentary film students disappear into the woods, and a year later their footage was found.

THE PLOT

Heather Donahue, Joshua Leonard, and Michael Williams are three student filmmakers heading to the woods of Burkittsville, Maryland to make a documentary of the legend of the Blair Witch.  Before heading into the woods, the three first decide to interview some of the locals and get their insight and impressions on the Blair Witch legend.  Most of what they say is somewhat silly, but still a little eerie.  Regardless if it’s just a legend or not, the townspeople strongly believe in it and advise against anyone entering the woods to investigate.  After learning of the legend and ready to get started, the trio enthusiastically makes their way into the woods leaving the car behind on a back-road.  Following a map that Heather is sure is accurate, they head deep into the woods to film a few locations before returning to the car.  As night falls and it starts to rain, they decide to tent up for the night, but neither of them gets much sleep.  The following morning, they all claim to have heard strange noises during the night, and Josh swears he heard a cackling.

As they head deeper into the woods searching for an old graveyard, eventually they come to the realization that they’re lost.  Despite Heather’s optimism that they are fine, the group starts to fall apart and succumb to hunger, exhaustion, and paranoia of the creepy woods around them.  With each passing night, more and more strange sounds and occurrences bring the three to the brink of insanity, as now they aren’t just fighting with each other but fighting for their own lives!

SHOULD YOU SEE IT?

Not much can be said that hasn’t already been said of this film.  It has become notorious for its influence on modern day found footage horror.  When I went to see this movie in the theater, I knew very little about it.  I truly thought what I was watching was real!  The audience was stunned, and we were all very silent when exiting the screening room.  During the time it was released, a couple of friends and I had been late night wood walking every weekend out of boredom.  Not much going on in our small town, so it was a least something to do.  After viewing this movie though, neither of us did that anymore!  Obviously, this film had that kind of effect on me.  So, in my opinion, The Blair Witch Project is a great film, and one that will stand the test of time.
