“What happens when a haunted attraction goes wrong and the fear is real?!”

Ahhhh found footage horror.  This is a genre known all too well by horror fans as of late.  Over the past decade or so it has pretty much become a staple in the community ever since the flood gates were opened with the release of Paranormal Activity.  It could even go back further to the iconic film The Blair Witch Project.  Or, for the purists, we could trace it back to the Godfather of the genre with the cult classic Cannibal Holocaust!  The problem with found footage films is that since the release of these classics, pretty much everyone who can operate a camera thought they could make a horror movie.  However, true fans know that it’s not as easy as it looks.

Well, once in a while a true gem comes along that breathes new life back into this hit or miss trend.  In 2016, a little known film popped up on VOD formats that got everyone talking….. Hell House LLC!  Written and directed by Stephen Cognetti, this is found footage done the way it’s supposed to be! Winner of Best Paranormal Film at the Fear Fete Film Festival in October of 2015, it’s sure to send a chill down your spine.

THE PLOT

The film follows a traveling haunted attraction company called Hell House as they gear up for another Halloween season by setting up in an abandoned hotel just outside of New York.  Led by Alex (Danny Bellini), who is strongly business-minded and won’t settle for anything less than perfect execution.  The rest of the crew include his loyal and supportive girlfriend Sara (Ryan Jennifer Jones), jokester Paul (Gore Abrams), and his two technical prop guys Tony (Jared Hacker) and Andrew (Adam Schneider).

The film is a bit Tarantino-ish starting out 5 years after an apparent “malfunction” of the attraction, which resulted in tragedy.  A documentary crew led by Diane Graves (Alice Bahlke) tries to piece everything together and get down to the bottom of what happened that October night.  As she interviews local authorities and witnesses, it starts to become clear that more went on at that hotel than what has been revealed to the public.  Surprisingly, one of the survivors is Sara herself who agrees to let the documentary crew review all the footage taken from inside the hotel where Hell House was set up.  It’s here that all the questions are answered, and the truth about what happened is shockingly revealed!

SHOULD YOU SEE IT?

I can confidently say that this is one of the BEST found footage movies I’ve seen in a long time!  To say that it’s flawless may be a stretch, but it’s done expertly.  What makes it work so well is the setup.  We are immediately thrown into the chaos that transpired, and then we get to see how it all came to be.  This was perfect for keeping me engaged throughout.  The local interviews kept it interesting and made everything seem that much more real.  At times, I felt like I was actually watching a REAL documentary!

The entire cast was spot on with their performances, and being relatively unknown made their character development more effective.  The best part of this movie was the cinematography.  Many people complain about found footage films being too chaotic with the shaky camera technique, but in this instance it worked brilliantly!  The tension build up with that whole “what’s gonna pop up around the corner” approach was genius and because of the great acting and camera work, we only catch glimpses of the horror.  This movie is legitimately scary and never lets up all the way to the shocking conclusion! I can’t recommend this one enough, because it’s THAT good!  So, the next time you go through a haunted attraction during the Halloween season, this movie might make you think twice about whether or not you are a spectator or have become part of the haunt itself!

“A chilling look at the reality of family tragedy.”

When many people hear “Australia,” the first things that normally come to mind are crocs, snakes, spiders, outback, etc.  What many fail to realize is that the Australian people are also great filmmakers!  What they do best is reach the viewing audience on all levels.  Whether it’s extreme horror such as The Loved Ones and Wolf Creek, or the psychological dramas such as Snowtown and the more recent The Babadook, the Aussies know what they’re doing in the horror genre.

In 2008, a low budget indie film emerged and has been hailed as an instant cult classic in the found footage fan community.  This film is known as Lake Mungo.  Written and directed by Joel Anderson in his first full length feature, it made its way through various film festivals starting with South by Southwest in Austin, TX and the Traveling Film Fest Wagga Wagga in Australia, before being picked up by the After Dark Horrorfest in the U.S. resulting in mostly positive reviews.

THE PLOT

The film follows the Palmers, a local family of the city of Ararat.  Following the tragic drowning loss of the 16 year old daughter, Alice (Talia Zucker), the recount of the story is told through documented interviews with Alice’s parents Russell (David Pledger) and June (Rosie Traynor) and brother Mathew (Martin Sharpe) as well as local friends and co-workers.

Soon after Alice’s disappearance and her body’s eventual recovery, strange things begin to take place in the family’s home.  This leads Mathew to set up cameras in the hopes of capturing evidence that maybe Alice’s spirit is present.  As the family reviews the evidence, which leaving them with more questions than answers, they contact a local psychic named Ray Kemeny (Steve Jodrell) hoping for some sort of closure.  Soon, things get stranger and new evidence surfaces leaving everyone wondering what kind of secret life Alice may have been leading.  Now the Palmer family must take things into their own hands in order to solve the mystery of their beloved Alice, with the hopes that she will finally rest in peace.

SHOULD YOU SEE IT?

Being a HUGE fan of paranormal found footage style films, it was a surprise to me that I had never heard of this gem of a film years ago.  Thanks to some reliable sources, I was encouraged to give it a view and am VERY glad I did!  It’s a very engaging and compelling film, to say the least.  Although not a film for everyone’s taste, it’s definitely one I would recommend to a fan of this genre of film. The acting is top notch, and the cinematography is excellent!

Even though I would call it more of a psychological drama than a straight up horror film, it does have some very well executed scenes of tension and dread that can leave the viewer emotionally drained by the time the credits start to roll. (By the way…be sure to watch through the credits for the added bonus). To get the full effect, I would give the same advice that I received: Turn off the lights, cut out all distractions, and really GIVE yourself to the film.  You won’t be disappointed.  Excellent film!

Blair Witch

watch-now-on-amazon-instant-video

“Once again that fear of being lost in the woods has been reignited!”

In 1999, the world had a bomb dropped on it when that iconic classic independent film The Blair Witch Project was released.  It changed the way horror films were made and brought forth what is now known as “found footage” horror.  Nowadays, this genre of horror is everywhere, and although some have been better than others, none will ever have the impact that Project did all those years ago.  Since then, we all wondered if a proper sequel would ever surface.  Book of Shadows was a failed attempt, and most have tried to forget about it.

This past spring, a teaser trailer was released for a film entitled The Woods.  Eventually, it would be revealed to be the next film in the series simply titled Blair Witch.  Written by Simon Barrett and directed by Adam Wingard, both known for the V/H/S series and Your Next, Blair Witch shows us all why being lost in the woods is still a terrifying thing!

THE PLOT

James (James Allen McCune) has made a startling discovery: a recent YouTube video of some found footage that could be a link in the mysterious vanishing of his older sister Heather, which happened years ago when he was a young boy.  He wants some answers and decides to head to those same woods in the hopes that Heather is still out there.  James and his friends Lisa (Callie Hernandez), Peter (Brandon Scott), and Ashley (Corbin Reed) all head out to Burkittsville, Maryland.  Upon arriving, they locate Lane (Wes Robinson) and Talia (Valorie Curry), the local people who uploaded the video in question, in hopes of finding out where they found the tape.  Lane and Talia agree to lead them to the location, as long as they’re allowed to accompany the group out of their own curiosity of the local legends of the Blair Witch.

Once they all arrive, things quickly go wrong when Ashley becomes injured, and it becomes apparent that things are not what they seem.  As the hours go by, it now seems like they are lost, confused, and possibly being watched and hunted by an unseen force that drives them all to the brink of insanity.  This planned out search and rescue mission has now become a fight for survival with seemingly no positive outcome for anyone involved!

SHOULD YOU SEE IT?

I had been looking forward to this film for quite some time.  After first viewing the teaser trailer months ago, I was immediately intrigued.  Another found footage horror film….one of my favorite genres! Despite the heavy negative reviews, my wife and I went into it optimistically.  I wasn’t expecting it to break new ground, or have the same powerful impact as the original Blair Witch Project, but I was still pleasantly surprised.  It’s hard to say if it’s a Remake, Reboot, or Sequel.  A little bit of all three, I guess.  It pays homage to the original quite a bit, but with its own spin, and is slightly modernized with newer filming technology.   My only complaints would have to be the many, many predictable jump scares and the overuse of loud noises/screaming, along with a bit too many POV edits.  It became a little unnerving at times, and the shaky camera effect was a little distracting.  Then again, that somewhat made the tension and frantic actions of the actors seem believable.

All in all, I would say it was entertaining and definitely creepy at times.  The last 20 minutes or so were very tense and full of heart-pounding moments with an interesting twist to the whole plot!  To say it’s terrifying is totally subjective.  Nowadays, it’s tough for a movie to truly scare the crap out of me, but I will say that Blair Witch definitely has its moments.  All in all, fun fright flick!

Rorschach

“Sometimes even the most skeptic paranormal researcher can’t debunk everything!”

Paranormal “found footage” style horror films have become very popular in recent years.  The low budget smash hit Paranormal Activity really paved the way for this growing trend.  Although most have been a hit, there have been a few misses as well.  In October of 2015, an independent film hit the web and has quickly gained notoriety as possibly the “scariest film online.”  That film is simply known as Rorschach. Written and directed by C.A. Smith, and co-produced by Smith and Nihar Brahmbhatt, Rorschach is a great example of “sometimes less is more.”

THE PLOT

Two skeptic, but open-minded paranormal researchers, Ricky (Ricky Lee Barnes) and Ross (Ross Compton) are on their way to their next case.  A single mother Jamy (Jamy Gillespie) is concerned that some sort of entity may be trying to communicate with her 7 year old daughter, Ashlynn (Ashlynn Allen).  When they arrive at the residence, they do what most people in their field would do.  They sit down with the client to get a background on their family history and the history of the home.  Being both skeptics and scientists, they explain that most paranormal claims can be dismissed as natural occurrences such as environmental surroundings and common old-home sounds such as creaks and knocks.

After doing a walk through without any significant activity, they decide to set up some recording equipment to see what may happen.  Immediately, they capture something odd and decide to stick around for a while to see what else may happen.  Over the next few nights, the activity slowly increases with no logical explanations.  Now it quickly becomes apparent that things may not be what they seem!

SHOULD YOU SEE IT?

I have to say that my wife and I really enjoyed this film!  It legitimately gave us that uneasy feeling, similar to what we experienced upon our first viewing of Paranormal Activity. What makes Rorschach so effective is the realistic documentary vibe and the slow-burn pace with the ever increasing tension that really delivers!  A nice and refreshing twist on the whole story is the addition of the young daughter’s child-like doll named Patrick.  If you’re familiar with the name Annabelle….enough said!

I would definitely recommend this gem of a movie to any fan of “found footage” style paranormal films.  I believe that the filmmakers behind this one really did a great job, and I look forward to what they have in store for us in the future.  Those things that go bump in the night could be more than what you think…and could really test your courage if you decide to investigate the sound yourself!

Grave Encounters

 watch-now-on-amazon-instant-video  buyamazon-1

“What happens when a reality show becomes VERY much a reality and no longer a show?!”

In the mid 2000’s, paranormal investigation reality shows were on the rise.  Shows like Ghost Hunters, Ghost Adventures, etc., were becoming a household name and began inspiring many other shows and a few films as well.  One of those films was 2011’s creepy found footage movie Grave Encounters.  Written and directed by Colin Minihan and Stuart Ortiz, collectively known as The Vicious Brothers, Grave Encounters was a clever and interesting twist on the very popular found footage horror films at the time.

THE PLOT

The film begins with a television producer describing the popular, but short lived paranormal reality show, know as Grave Encounters.  He explains that the “found footage” he’s about to show is the raw and uncut last episode ever filmed.

The crew of Grave Encounters is a paranormal investigative group led by the show’s host Lance Preston (Sean Rogerson).  Along with Preston are an occult specialist Sasha Parker (Ashleigh Gryzko), tech. expert Matt White (Juan Riedinger), and camera man T.C. Gibson (Merwin Mondesir).  Joining the crew for this final episode is special guest medium Houston Gray (Mackenzie Gray).  For the show’s final episode, they decide to go out with a bang and do an all night investigation of the long time abandoned Collingwood Psychiatric Hospital.  After receiving a tour from the hospital’s caretaker and learning the twisted history of the place, Lance and the crew decide to voluntarily lock themselves in for the night with confidence that the caretaker will let them out at first light the following morning.

As night falls, the crew starts their investigation.  Although not much happens for the first few hours, Lance is extremely optimistic that this will be their best case ever!  Before long, the activity kicks in, and the team is floored at what they have caught.  As dawn approaches, they decide that they’ve captured enough evidence and start to pack up.  Little do they know, the hospital contains some dark secrets and they quickly realize that not only are they not alone, but the hospital’s “inhabitants” have no plans to let them leave without the best “evidence” that they or any other paranormal research team has ever captured!

SHOULD YOU SEE IT?

I for one LOVED this film!  During its release, my wife and I were really into ghost hunting reality shows, and paranormal movies as well.  It’s a very creepy movie, full of some really great special effects and excellent jump scares.  Being a found footage style film, you get a first-hand look at the chaos and high tension fear that the characters are going through.  Throw in some nice twists along the way, and you never know what might happen next!  If you ever have the urge to do some “ghost hunting”, be sure that you always have an escape plan, because you never know…YOU may be the hunted!

The Blair Witch Project

watch-now-on-amazon-instant-video   buyamazon-1

“Some legends are true…and better left unknown.”

When the term “found footage horror” is brought up, the first to do it was Cannibal Holocaust.  In 1999, a low budget independent film changed the face of cinema and reinvented “found footage” into modern day pop culture.  That movie is none other than The Blair Witch Project!  Shot entirely on hand-held cameras by the actors themselves and filmed on a very low budget, it became one of the highest grossing indie films of all time.  Co-written and co-directed by Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sanchez, it has become an instant cult classic and will go down as one of the scariest films of all time.  The plot is simple.  Three documentary film students disappear into the woods, and a year later their footage was found.

THE PLOT

Heather Donahue, Joshua Leonard, and Michael Williams are three student filmmakers heading to the woods of Burkittsville, Maryland to make a documentary of the legend of the Blair Witch.  Before heading into the woods, the three first decide to interview some of the locals and get their insight and impressions on the Blair Witch legend.  Most of what they say is somewhat silly, but still a little eerie.  Regardless if it’s just a legend or not, the townspeople strongly believe in it and advise against anyone entering the woods to investigate.  After learning of the legend and ready to get started, the trio enthusiastically makes their way into the woods leaving the car behind on a back-road.  Following a map that Heather is sure is accurate, they head deep into the woods to film a few locations before returning to the car.  As night falls and it starts to rain, they decide to tent up for the night, but neither of them gets much sleep.  The following morning, they all claim to have heard strange noises during the night, and Josh swears he heard a cackling.

As they head deeper into the woods searching for an old graveyard, eventually they come to the realization that they’re lost.  Despite Heather’s optimism that they are fine, the group starts to fall apart and succumb to hunger, exhaustion, and paranoia of the creepy woods around them.  With each passing night, more and more strange sounds and occurrences bring the three to the brink of insanity, as now they aren’t just fighting with each other but fighting for their own lives!

SHOULD YOU SEE IT?

Not much can be said that hasn’t already been said of this film.  It has become notorious for its influence on modern day found footage horror.  When I went to see this movie in the theater, I knew very little about it.  I truly thought what I was watching was real!  The audience was stunned, and we were all very silent when exiting the screening room.  During the time it was released, a couple of friends and I had been late night wood walking every weekend out of boredom.  Not much going on in our small town, so it was a least something to do.  After viewing this movie though, neither of us did that anymore!  Obviously, this film had that kind of effect on me.  So, in my opinion, The Blair Witch Project is a great film, and one that will stand the test of time.

The Last Exorcism

watch-now-on-amazon-instant-video   buyamazon-1

“Possession can be real…even if you don’t want it to be!”

The Godfather of demon possession movies, The Exorcist, has inspired many horror films past and present.  An interesting take on this topic came in the 2010 “found footage” style thriller The Last Exorcism.  Co-written by Huck Botko and Andrew Gurland, directed by Daniel Stamm and co-produced by Eli Roth, the film takes a documentary style approach at the inner works of exorcism.

THE PLOT

Cotton Marcus (Patrick Fabian) is a very charismatic Louisiana reverend who has made a living performing exorcisms.  He is locally known for putting on a “show” during his sermons, knowing that the congregation will eat it up and are easily influenced.  He decides to let a documentary crew follow him and get a better look into his daily life.  Once a man of strong faith, he now leads a life of religious doubt due to the fact that he gives credit to science rather than God for the healing of his disabled son.  Now feeling that possession can be chalked up to nothing more than psychological problems, he decides to expose exorcism for the fraud it is.  He invites the documentary crew to accompany him on a new case….a young farm girl whose father believes that “the Devil” himself has taken control of her.

Upon arrival, he and the crew are met with Louis Sweetzer (Louis Herthum) and his son Caleb (Caleb Landry Jones) with some reluctance as they question Cotton’s motives involving the camera crew.  After examining young Nell (Ashley Bell), Cotton knows that this is his opportunity to use her “problem” to sell his exorcism ability for a nice payday.  He has a whole bag of tricks in his arsenal and can make an “exorcism” look very authentic.  After performing his mock exorcism and collecting his cash, he feels like it’s a job well done and decides to stay a nearby hotel for the night before returning home the next day.  As night falls, Nell mysteriously appears at the hotel somewhat zoned out and not sure how she got there.  When they return to her farmhouse, Cotton and the crew quickly realize that there may be more to Nell’s story than they expected.  Now Cotton must summon his lost faith, if he is to save Nell and themselves from the supernatural forces that surround them!

SHOULD YOU SEE IT?

I personally loved this film!  It was an interesting take on demon possession and left me questioning what really happened as I was returning home from the theater.  Was she really possessed, or was it all in her head?  The interpretation is really left up to the viewer, and I think that is what the filmmakers were shooting for.  The story is very intriguing, the acting is great, and it has a very chilling feel to the whole thing.  Would definitely recommend it!

Cannibal Holocaust

buyamazon-1

“Before Paranormal Activity, before The Blair Witch Project…There was Cannibal Holocaust!”

Labeled as “The Most Controversial Movie Ever Made” comes the godfather of found footage films, 1980’s Cannibal Holocaust.  Written by Gianfranco Clerici, and directed by the infamous Ruggero Deodato, the film has been banned in many countries and has been surrounded in controversy for over 30 years.

THE PLOT

Two months have passed since a young and naive film crew has disappeared deep into the jungles of South America to document the existence of cannibal tribes.  In order to solve the mystery, a NYC university has assigned anthropologist Professor Harold Monroe (Robert Kerman) to travel to the jungle to figure out what has happened.  With the aid of a Venezuelan guide and a local tribesman, who has been captured and wrongly suspected to be a cannibal, the professor travels deep into the “Green Inferno” in the hopes of finding some sort of evidence of the missing film crew.  Eventually they encounter the feared and mysterious Yamamomo tribe.  Once he has established a sort of peace with the tribe, he stumbles across the camera equipment and a pile of film canisters that contain all of the footage shot by the missing film crew.

Once he returns to NY, Professor Monroe presents his findings to the University board.  They decide that they want to try to cash in on these discoveries by having Monroe review the footage and prepare it for a documentary on the film crew that vanished.  As he begins to review the films, he quickly discovers that more went on in that jungle than just a simple “observe and document” series of events.  In order to prevent this footage from being revealed to the public, Monroe must show it to the board executives, hoping that they will think twice about it.  What they view is some of the most disturbing and shocking footage they’ve ever seen!

SHOULD YOU SEE IT?

This movie is one of the most controversial and infamous films ever made.  In fact, the director himself almost faced life in prison when it was released, because the Italian courts thought they were viewing actual footage of murders.  He had to physically produce the actors themselves in order to clear himself of the charges.  To top it all off, some of the biggest controversy comes with the fact that several animals were actually killed on camera.  Compared to some of the present day horror films, some may find this film rather tame, but for its time, Cannibal Holocaust was pretty hardcore!  The special effects are great, and the gore is very convincing.  It is the first of its kind and, without a doubt, the trailblazer of the found footage genre of horror!
