High Tension

watch-now-on-amazon-instant-video  buyamazon-1

“Brutally intense and unnerving from start to finish!”

In the early to mid 2000’s the French were on fire with their contributions to the horror genre.  This “French Wave of Horror” gave us extreme films such as Irreversible, Inside, and Martyrs.  One of the early films of this nature was the extremely violent and tense thriller, 2003’s High Tension.  Co-written by Gregory Levasseur and director Alexandre Aja, it has become one of the most talked about French extreme horror films.  From the opening sequence to the jaw dropping conclusion, the film never lets up on the intensity and gruesome violence!

THE PLOT

Best friends Marie (Cecile de France) and Alexia (Alex) (Maiwenn Le Besco) are heading to Alex’s parent’s farmhouse for the weekend in hopes of relaxing and studying for their college exams.  They are greeted by Alex’s father and after giving Marie a quick tour, they have dinner and decide to turn in for the night.  Before long the doorbell rings, and without warning an unknown sadistic killer breaks in and goes on a gruesome rampage throughout the home.  Marie quickly hides under the bed, as the killer makes his way room by room, looking for his next victim.  Quietly Marie sneaks into Alex’s room to find her chained to the bed.  She tells Alex to stay calm as she goes into the parent’s room to try to call for help, but before she can do so, the killer approaches the room prompting Marie to hide in the closet.  The killer then drags Alex to his truck, and before he leaves Marie is forced to sneak into the truck as well, praying that she and Alex will escape this horrific night alive!

SHOULD YOU SEE IT?

My immediate reaction to this film as the ending credits started rolling were “I LOVE, LOVE, LOVED THAT MOVIE!”  It was a great horror flick to say the least and definitely lived up to its title!  That being said, it’s a VERY violent movie!  Full of blood, gore, and disturbing content, it can be tough to watch if you’re squeamish.  The driving force behind the film is the wild twist, which I definitely didn’t see coming!  I would warn a first time viewer to be careful to not read any spoilers, because if the twist is revealed, it will ruin it for you.  Once again, the French sure know how to deliver some intense and extreme horror, and in my opinion, High Tension is no exception!

“An eye-opening and emotional look at real life family dysfunction.”

Every now and then, a low budget indie film comes along that really stands out as great film-making.  In 2012, one of those movies made its way through numerous film festivals and has quickly become an underground cult smash hit.  That film is simply known as Found.  Written and based on the novel by Todd Rigney and directed by Scott Schirmer in his first full length feature film, Found is an emotional and disturbing look at real issues in the modern world of racism, bullying, neglect, and troubled family life.

THE PLOT

Twelve year old Marty (Gavin Brown) is a very troubled young boy struggling with multiple issues.  His home life is shaky with his somewhat neglectful parents who don’t seem to understand him.  On top of that, he’s having a tough time at school due to constant bullying which just feeds his low self esteem and in turn his closed off personality.  His only comfort seems to be his love for horror movies, which his mother reluctantly allows him to watch simply because she sees that it’s his only joy in life.

One day out of boredom, Marty decides to prowl around in his older brother Steve’s (Ethan Philbeck) room and makes a startling discovery in the closet.  Not sure what to think, he decides to keep it to himself, fearful of what Steve would say or do if he found out.  To try to take his mind off his recent discovery, Marty plans a movie night with his only friend David.  While at the local movie rental store, Marty makes a few selections.  One movie that catches his eye is a film called Headless.  Unfortunately, the clerk informed his that this video is either lost or stolen.  Later at home, Marty decides to rummage through Steve’s movie collection and stumbles upon the missing movie from the store.  As he and David start to watch it, Marty quickly discovers that this VERY graphic movie seems to be a possible “inspiration” for the dark and twisted secret that his brother Steve may be hiding.  As the days go on, Marty’s anxiety rises.  He realizes that he must make a choice…either tell his parents about his suspicion or keep quiet out of fear that his brother may be aware that Marty knows something!

SHOULD YOU SEE IT?

Found is a different kind of indie horror film.  Winner of many awards from multiple film festivals, it deserves all the credit and praise it has been given.  From personal experience, and from what I’ve heard from other reviews and discussions, it’s definitely one of those rare films that will stick with you days after viewing it. The last series of events are very disturbing, and for some, possibly tough to watch.  I would label it as more of a drama than a horror film.  Sure, it definitely does have its fair share of violent and shocking content, but what makes it work is that the violence is done properly and not just for shock value.  The message in this film can be eye-opening and a possible PSA for the real life issues in today’s society.  You never know what really goes on behind closed doors of even the most “perfect” looking families out there.

Saw

 watch-now-on-amazon-instant-video  buyamazon-1

“How much blood would you be willing to spill in order to survive?”

“I wanna play a game.”  This is the unmistakable quote that started a franchise and horror culture phenomenon!  When you think “torture porn,” one movie rises above them all….2004’s psychological gore-fest Saw.  The feature film debut of the great horror director James Wan, and co-written by Leigh Whannell, it has become one of the most successful horror franchises of all time.  Filmed in just 18 days and on a relatively small budget, it was first screened at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2004 and quickly made its festival rounds before hitting theaters nationwide.

THE PLOT

In an old, seemingly abandoned bathroom, two men find themselves trapped with no recollection of how they got there.  A photographer named Adam (Leigh Whannel) and Dr. Lawrence Gordon (Cary Elwes) are both shackled and chained to pipes on opposite sides of the room, with a dead body lying in the center of the room holding a revolver in one hand and a small tape player in the other.  Soon the two men discover they each have a small tape, and after retrieving the player from the corpse, they play the tapes.  The voice they hear is of the notorious serial killer known by the authorities as “Jigsaw”.  He has been given this name due to his “calling card” left on the victims…a puzzle piece shaped section of skin cut away from their body.  He is a different kind of killer, though.  Never actually killing them himself, rather he puts his victims in terrible situations or “games” in order to test their willingness to survive.  Adam’s test:  watch himself die or do what it takes to survive.  Lawrence’s test:  kill Adam before the clock runs out in order to save his wife and daughter.  The only catch seems to be that they both must be willing to use the hacksaws found in one of the toilets in order to escape their shackles!  As time and options begin running out, both men start to come to terms with their fates and must make serious and life changing decisions in order to survive.  Let the game begin!

SHOULD YOU SEE IT?

I was a little late on jumping on this bandwagon, as I didn’t watch it until a friend recommended it upon its DVD release.  I didn’t know much about it at the time, and I’m actually glad for that.  Not only was it a great flick, but it also contains an awesome twist that I never saw coming!  After viewing this movie, it became a yearly tradition for my wife and me to head to the theaters with some friends to watch each sequel.  Not only do the sequels get gorier, but they also expand on the story which in turn becomes one huge psychological mystery with unexpected twists at every turn!  Not all games are fun, and in this case…no one wins!

Martyrs (2008)

watch-now-on-amazon-instant-video

“How far would you go for revenge….and is it worth it?”

In the early 2000’s when torture, gore and rape revenge movies were growing in popularity, a new wave of horror decided to throw itself in the mix.  It would eventually come to be known and the “French wave of horror.”  Several have been released, and the one that seems to stand out the most is 2008’s controversial and violent shocker Martyrs.  Written and directed by Pascal Laugier (The Tall Man, House of Voices) it has been found on many lists of the most disturbing films ever made.  Extremely violent and depraved, it has been known for many walkouts and some reported faintings at select screenings.

THE PLOT

The film opens with a badly beaten young girl hysterically crying and running from some sort of hell from which she has escaped.  She is later admitted into a youth home for the abused, where she refuses to discuss her traumatizing experience with any of the doctors and appears to only open up to one particular friend.

Fifteen years later, Lucie (Mylene Jampanoi), constantly reliving the nightmare, decides she just can’t take it anymore.  Eventually locating the house from which she escaped, she confronts the family and takes the law into her own hands.  Ultimately she hopes that this will finally rid her of the sort of “creature” that has haunted and attacked her for years.  Sure that she has done the “right thing”, she calls her only friend Anna (Morjana Alaoui) to come and help her.  As she awaits Anna’s arrival, the “creature” attacks her again.  Running outside to escape, she runs into Anna, who consoles her and goes inside to inspect what Lucie has done to the family. When Lucie falls asleep upstairs, Anna starts to try and clean up the mess and the evidence.  As things go from bad to worse, Anna stumbles upon a hidden area beneath the house.  It turns out that there was a motive to Lucie’s childhood trauma.  Now that the terrible secret is revealed, Anna’s nightmarish hell begins!

SHOULD YOU SEE IT?

This really is an excellent piece of cinema.  It’s incredibly acted and really hits the viewer on an emotional level.  It will probably go down as a somewhat cult classic, due to its content and strong following.  I must warn you, though.  It’s very violent and at times really tough to watch.  The French sure can deliver some horror on an extreme level, and they do it well with this one.  Great movie!

Hostel

watch-now-on-amazon-instant-video   buyamazon-1

“How far will someone go to fulfill their twisted fetish….and at what cost?”

At the turn of the century, a new wave of horror reared its ugly head.  Filmmakers would push the boundaries and try to find new and creative ways to shock and disgust audiences. Some call it gore, or splatter.  Eventually it would come to be known as “torture porn”.  When this term is brought up, one film definitely comes to mind…none other than 2005’s shocking torture film, Hostel.  Brought to us by infamous writer and director, Eli Roth (Cabin Fever, The Green Inferno), it is considered by some to be one of the most shocking and disturbing films to sit through.

THE PLOT

Two American backpackers Paxton (Jay Hernandez) and Josh (Derek Richardson), along with their new Icelandic friend Oli (Eythor Gudjonsson) looking to fulfill their sinful desires are making their way through Europe living it up with no hesitation to try anything “fun”.  While in Amsterdam, they meet a stranger who informs them that if they really want to fulfill their sexual desires then they need to head to the Slovak city of Bratislava.  Here is where the women LOVE American men, and are willing to do anything they wish.  Sounding too good to be true, the three young men board the next train to Slovakia in hopes of “scoring” big!  After checking into a local Hostel, they soon meet up with two beautiful local women, who encourage them to spend the day and night with them.  It seems like their dreams have come true and nothing could possibly go wrong….big mistake!

The next morning, Paxton and Josh awaken with little memory of what happened the night before, and can’t seem to find or contact Oli anywhere.  Thinking that he will show up eventually, the two decide to keep living it up and spend another night partying with the two lovely, but suspicious, ladies.  After succumbing to heavy intoxication, the guys become separated with Paxton passed out in a disco storage room.  Josh, on the other hand, awakens handcuffed to a chair in the middle of some sort of dungeon like room surrounded by countless torture-like instruments.  Little does he know the hell that awaits him!  With time running out and no clues to the disappearance of his two friends, Paxton quickly discovers that the two ladies had a motive all along, and are hiding a dark and deadly secret that seems impossible for anyone to survive!  Now Paxton must place himself into a nightmare that he could never have imagined in order to try to save his friends….and himself!

SHOULD YOU SEE IT?

I’ll never forget going to see this film when it opened in theaters.  It was a huge “word of mouth” film, and I wasn’t quite sure what to expect.  My wife and I thought it was great, but my friend and his wife didn’t like it at all.  It seems that this film is just that kind of movie.  You’ll either love it, or hate it.  What makes it so effective is most of the violence is off screen, so the horror is mostly left up to your own imagination.  Don’t get me wrong, it definitely has a fair share of shocking and violent scenes.  It’s not something I would recommend to the easily offended or squeamish, but if you have a tough stomach and love these types of film, it can’t be missed.  It’s not just a shock and gore flick.  The acting and story are well done, and Eli Roth does a great job at slow burning the tension with a great payoff!

Hatchet

watch-now-on-amazon-instant-video  buyamazon-1

“A great old fashioned slasher flick, that’s gallons of bloody fun!”

If you’re a fan of old school 80’s style splatter films, then look no further.  Paying tribute to the slasher flicks that we have all come to know and love, comes 2006’s Hatchet.  Written and directed by Adam Green (Frozen, the ski-lift thriller), Hatchet has enough blood, guts, gore, and 80’s campy cheese to entertain any horror movie fan!

THE PLOT

Set in the good ole’ Louisiana bayou, the film follows Ben (Joel David Moore) and his best friend Marcus (Deon Richmond) who are celebrating Mardi Gras in an attempt to cheer up Ben since his recent breakup.  In an attempt to think outside the box, they decide to go on a haunted swamp tour.  Accompanied by an oddball group of tourists, the trip quickly takes a turn for the worse when their inexperienced tour guide crashes the boat and leaves them all stranded in the swamplands.  Now they are about to face an even bigger problem…Victor Crowley (Kane Hodder).  Thought to be just a local legend, Crowley, a deformed and tormented man, wanders the swamps looking for his father and killing anyone who dares to set foot on his territory.  As the night progresses, the lost and terrified tourists have to rely on each other in order to try to survive Victor Crowley’s gruesome and bloody rampage!

SHOULD YOU SEE IT?

This film is a nice and refreshing splatter film, with enough humor to keep it more than just a gore-fest.  Director Adam Green’s “No CGI rule” makes this movie even more fun, because it relies on the old fashioned practical effects that have become a bit lost in today’s horror films.  Special effects artist John Carl Buechler, whose work includes Goulies, Friday the 13th Part VII, Nightmare on Elm Street 4, and Halloween 4, does a great job here! One kill scene in particular really stands out to me as one of the most brutal deaths I’ve ever seen in a movie.  Kane Hodder  himself told me that it was his favorite kill that he’s filmed!  Decent acting, great special effects, hilarious dark humor, and a few horror icon cameos make Hatchet a bloody good time!

I Spit on Your Grave

watch-now-on-amazon-instant-video   buyamazon-1

“The moral of the story….No means No!”

Hell definitely hath no fury, like a woman scorned!  These words could not be any more right on than what is portrayed in the 1978 cult classic shocker I Spit on Your Grave.  Written and directed by Meir Zarchi, I Spit on Your Grave is considered one of the most controversial and disturbing movies ever made.  Originally titled Day of the Woman, it set the groundwork for the “Rape/Revenge” genre of horror.

THE PLOT

Jennifer Hills (Camille Keaton), an aspiring writer has decided to leave the city and find isolation at a cottage in the countryside to focus on writing her first novel.  It seems like the ideal setting…no distractions, peace and quiet, and inspiration.  Little does she know, the local men in the town are nothing more than backwoods degenerate misogynists with absolutely no morals and seemingly little intelligence.  The only person that Jennifer seems to be able to trust is the local grocery delivery boy, Matthew.  Apparently mentally handicapped, Mathew quickly grows a crush on Jennifer because of her beauty and sweetness towards him.  When he tells the local guys about her, they think that it’s humorous and decide to help Matthew out, by setting up a way for him to lose his virginity with her.

One day while she is relaxing in a canoe, Jennifer is caught off guard by Matthew and his three “friends” and they tow her boat to shore using a speedboat.  Once on shore, the men try to encourage Matthew to “go for it”, but he is too shy and refuses to go through with it.  Frustrated, Johnny, the seemingly leader of the group, wrestles her to the ground and strips off her bikini and violently rapes her.  What follows is very disturbing and shocking to say the least.  The men stalk her and attack her multiple times as she tries to make her way home.  Once she gets there, the madness continues until the men decide to leave, thinking that leaving her for dead is the best option.

Over the next few days, Jennifer tries to recollect herself and does a lot of soul searching.  What the men don’t know is that they’ve awakened an angry and vengeful beast!  Jennifer starts to put her plan into action, by seducing the men and playing into their game in order to extract her revenge on the men, one by one.

SHOULD YOU SEE IT?

Shocking, disturbing, and very controversial, I Spit on Your Grave is easily one of the toughest movies for most to sit through.  Some have labeled it as a “Female Empowerment” film, although most people would disagree.  I would say that any woman who has been victim to sexual violence should approach this film with caution.  It’s an incredibly twisted flick, that is both hard to watch and even harder to forget.

The Last House on the Left

watch-now-on-amazon-instant-video   buyamazon-1

To avoid fainting, keep repeating:  “It’s only a movie, only a movie, only a movie….”

One of the most iconic horror movies ever made, and for its time, one of the most disturbing, comes The Last House on the Left.  Written and directed by horror icon, the great Wes Craven in his directorial debut, and produced by yet another icon, Sean S. Cunningham (Friday the 13th), the film still holds up as one of the most twisted films in horror.  When Craven presented it to the MPAA, it was instantly labeled with an X rating for its graphic depictions of violence and disturbing content.  After several back and forth cuts of footage, eventually it was given an R rating, resulting in many different versions floating around in the cinematic world.

THE PLOT

Young Mari Collingwood (Sandra Peabody) and her “bad girl” best friend Phyllis Stone (Lucy Grantham) are on their way to New York City to celebrate Mari’s 17th birthday by attending a rock concert.  Although Mari’s parents aren’t too keen on the idea, they decide to let her go and prepare their home for a birthday party when she returns.  As Mari and Phyllis approach the city, they hear a radio news report of a group of escaped convicts who are considered armed and extremely dangerous.  As they walk the streets looking to score some weed for the concert, they stumble across a young guy standing on an apartment stairway and ask him if he’s selling.  He lures them inside and the girls realize that they are now trapped by the criminals they heard of earlier!  This group, led by Krug (David Hess), consists of his drug addicted son Junior (Marc Sheffler), his wild girlfriend Sadie (Jeramie Rain), and his psychotic cousin, Weasel (Fred J. Lincoln). These people have no intensions of making this an easy night for the girls, immediately assaulting and humiliating them.  As the night quickly goes from bad to worse, the girls have no idea what’s in store for them the following morning.

With the plan to head north and leave the country, the gang throws the girls in the trunk of the car and hit the road, only to break down not long after.  This leads them to drag the girls into the nearby woods and have some “fun” with them.  This is where the nightmare truly begins, and the two girls endure hours of complete humiliation and torture.  With Mari’s parents’ growing concern for their missing daughter, and the local law enforcement’s almost hopeless pursuit, the helpless girls’ chances of rescue and survival start to quickly fade away.

SHOULD YOU SEE IT?

This movie is definitely not for the faint of heart.  In my opinion, this low-budget film is far from perfect, but for fans of dark and deranged style horror, it’s a film that shouldn’t be overlooked.  Although the film was remade in 2009 (and well done, I might add), I feel that it’s important to watch the original first so you can appreciate the remake for what it is.

It was a very bold move for Wes Craven to create something this depraved and disturbing in the early 1970’s.  That being said, it laid the groundwork for a career that would soon blossom into something timeless and iconic.  With its use of gritty imagery, absurd soundtrack, and very believable and maniacal behavior of the deranged gang, The Last House on the Left will definitely make the viewer feel uneasy and possibly a little dirty long after its viewing!

The Human Centipede (First Sequence)

watch-now-on-amazon-instant-video   buyamazon-1

“A disgusting and twisted movie, with an almost humorous perverseness!”

So…what would be a suitable punishment for child molesters?  How about sewing their mouth to the anus of a fat truck driver!  This is the joke that inspired one of the most depraved concepts of a movie in the 2009 shock and disgust film The Human Centipede (First Sequence)From the twisted mind of infamous Dutch filmmaker, writer and director, Tom Six, comes a film that will go down as an instant cult classic.  Grossing out movie goers from all over, and causing a few walkouts at select screenings, this film definitely tests your stomach strength.

THE PLOT

Lindsay (Ashley C. Williams) and Jenny (Ashlynn Yennie), two American tourists traveling through Germany, get stranded on a backwoods road when their car breaks down on the way to a local nightclub.  Reluctantly, after refusing help from a very strange passing motorist, they wander through the woods looking for some sort of sign of civilization.  Just as it starts to rain, they finally stumble upon a remote mansion that seems to be their saving grace.  Little do they know, it is owned by the brilliant, but crazy surgeon Dr. Heiter, played brilliantly by actor Dieter Laser.  As the girls wait in his living room for him to call a tow service, he offers them some water with a little extra added to it, which in turn causes them to awaken hours later strapped to hospital beds along with another captive individual.  Then the show begins as Dr. Heiter gives them a sort of power point presentation of what he plans to do to the three of them.  World-renowned for his ability to separate conjoined twins, his new experiment is simple….to successfully combine three people mouth to anus via their digestive track creating the first “Human Centipede”!  Being a VERY skilled surgeon, his procedure is a success and the new creation is so remarkable in his eyes, that he feels as though it’s his greatest achievement.

Things begin to get complicated, as the physical condition of his creation becomes a little unstable, and the local authorities come by investigating some missing tourists.  With the three individuals helplessly fighting for survival, and the doctor refusing to let his masterpiece become a complete failure, there doesn’t seem to be any hope for a positive outcome for all those involved!

SHOULD YOU SEE IT?

As I watched this film for the first time, I’ll never forget my wife’s reaction when I told her what I was watching.  She literally gagged a little, and I found that to be exactly the reaction that Mr. Six was hoping for!  “I honestly got sick, and that’s the highest compliment I can give a horror film.” – Eli Roth.  I think that quote pretty much sums it up!  Great flick!

A Serbian Film

buyamazon-1

“A gut wrenching, visually scarring, soul crushing knockout blow to the senses!”

Hailed as one of the most disturbing films in existence, nothing can prepare you for 2010’s shocking film, A Serbian Film.  Brought to us by Serbian director Srdjan Spasojevic, in his directorial debut, A Serbian Film pulls no punches and does not disappoint in disturbing its viewer to the core! Screened for the first time at South by Southwest in Austin, TX in 2010, the film quickly gained notoriety for its extreme level of violence and controversial subject matter.

THE PLOT

Legendary Serbian ex-porn star, Milos (Srdjan Todorovic) and his family (wife Marija (Jelena Gavrilovic), and young son Peter) are a simple loving family.  Lately it seems that they are struggling just to make ends meet, largely due to the fact that Milos is retired from the porn business, in which he was VERY successful.  As he spends his nights watching his work, and trying to relive his “glory days”, he wonders what it would be like to go back to that life. He truly loves his family and is very frustrated at their current situation, even though his wife tries hard to remain optimistic.

One day, out of the blue, a former “coworker” of Milos’ contacts him and tells of a new pioneer in the porn business named Vukmir (Sergej Trifunovic).  He is interested in a new wave of “art film” style pornography, and has his sights set on the legendary Milos to be his star.  At first Milos is hesitant to comply, but is definitely interested, so he agrees to meet with the director.  Vukmir embraces Milos as if he is royalty, and does his best to sell his vision by offering an incredible amount of money if Milos would agree to star in his upcoming film.  An offer that is almost impossible to resist because it would set his family up for life.  The only catch….Milos cannot know anything about the plot or theme of the film and must act on direction from Vukmir through an in-ear microphone.  Unsure of what to think, Milos asks his police officer brother, Marko (Slobodan Bestic), to investigate into Vukmir.  After he seems to check out ok, Milos agrees to sign the contract.  As the filming begins, Milos quickly discovers that this particular porn film is much more extreme and uncomfortable to what he had shot in the past.  Deciding that it’s not his cup of tea, he meets back up with Vukmir to respectfully withdraw from any further filming.  Vukmir, however is not about to let his vision go up in smoke so easily, and decides that Milos WILL star in his film, no matter what the cost!  What follows over the next few days, is a nightmare in which Milos could have never imagined, and no one will soon forget!

SHOULD YOU SEE IT?

I have watched this film several times…first time alone, and a couple of other viewings with different people.  I guess I just needed some outside opinions, or something.  It’s a very powerful movie, to say the least.  It’s disturbing, disgusting, shocking, sickening, depressing, and unforgettable.  That being said, it’s also a VERY well made film.  Beautifully shot and wonderfully acted.  Throw in an outstanding soundtrack that sets the mood for each scene, it will really draw you in.  Would I recommend this movie?  Well, to the average movie watcher….probably not.  To someone who is easily offended?  Not at all.  To children?  DEFINITELY NOT!  I would only recommend to someone who asks “I wanna watch the most disturbing movie you have ever seen. Any ideas?”  This movie is a new level of film.  Tough to watch and impossible to “un-see.”  You have been warned!
