Dark Forest

“Weekend camping trips just never seem to go well…do they?”

A group of friends decide to get away for the weekend and go camping deep within the woods, but unbeknownst to them their care free time is about to take a turn for the worst!  Sound familiar?  Well, this is the usual setup for the slasher flicks that all horror fans have come to love over the years.  It’s been done countless times, and is usually hit or miss.  In 2015, a Canadian Indie film named Dark Forest emerged to prove that this popular horror genre will never die!  Written and directed by Roger Boyer in his first full length feature film, he shows that if done right, a slasher film can be simple but effective.

THE PLOT

The film primarily follows four friends as they prepare for a weekend camping trip.  The group is led by Michelle (Veronica Ternopolski) and includes her spunky sister Francine (Jalin Desloges), Jolene (Weronika Sokalska) who is excited to document the experience, and finally their troubled friend Emily (Laurel McArthur).  Emily’s “trouble” lies in her mentally and emotionally abusive boyfriend Peter (Dennis Scullard).

When Michelle comes to Emily’s home to pick her up, she is met with disturbing resistance by Peter leading to a brief confrontation.  After Michelle leaves, Emily ponders a tough choice while Peter sleeps…should she remain his “slave” or break free and join her friends?  She chooses the latter, and this proves to be a HUGE mistake.

As the girls begin their weekend fun, back at home a dangerous transformation is starting to take place, and Peter is letting his disturbing anger take over until he eventually snaps.  He decides to find the girls and end their good time with a blind rage that can’t be controlled!

SHOULD YOU SEE IT?

I, like most horror fans, have always been a fan of slasher flicks.  For the most part they can be a bit cheesy, with weak acting and occasional sub-par special effects. However one thing remains the same…they are supposed to be campy fun!  This film is exactly that, a bloody good time!  I believe director Roger Boyer achieved exactly what he set out to do.  He uses the right ingredients necessary to deliver a slasher flick anyone can enjoy.  It’s simple, effective, and has sprinkles of humor that don’t detract from the story.  It has a bit of violence towards women that some may find tough to watch, but given the plot, it works very well. I would say the standout performance comes from Dennis Scullard. His portrayal of a jealous controlling psychotic boyfriend is VERY convincing.

Overall I’d say I enjoyed this Indie film.  It’s exactly what one would expect from this type of flick.  Just keep in mind that if you’re planning a camping trip anytime soon, be sure that no one in the group has a psycho for a partner or this trip could be your last!

Knucklebones

“When trying to summon a demon…you must endure the consequences!”

The slasher genre of horror is always a favorite among horror fans.  Whether it’s the classic 80’s films such as Halloween and Friday the 13th, or the more modern movies such as Laid to Rest and Hatchet , fans are always in for a bloody treat!  In 2016, a new breed of slasher was unleashed, and we were introduced to a new face of fear.  This movie is called Knucklebones!  Written, directed, and produced by Mitch Wilson in his first full length feature film, it was an official selection at the Sitges and Frightfest London film festivals and has now been distributed by Midnight Releasing in the U.S.

THE PLOT

The film follows a young woman named Neesa (Julin), who is struggling with a troubled past and currently dealing with some personal relationship problems.  After recovering from a difficult decision, she is encouraged by her best friend Samantha (Katie Bosacki) to join her and some friends for a night of drinking and just kicking back to have some fun.  Along with Adam (Cameron Dean Stewart), Travis (Justin Arnold), and Kia (Taylor Tippins), the group decides to hang out in an old abandoned factory.

After a few drinks, they decide to wander around and discover a hidden crate containing a small box of “summoning stones” made from the bones of a human hand.  These stones are capable of summoning the ancient demon known as Knucklebones (Tom Zembrod), a German military experiment gone horribly wrong 40 years prior!  After a mixed decision, they decide to try the ritual, and the results are horrifically disastrous!  They’ve successfully summoned Knucklebones, and he seems to have only one thing in mind…kill all who stand in his way!  As the bodies pile up, and with the demon seemingly unstoppable, the remaining few are left with little hope for survival!

SHOULD YOU SEE IT?

I stumbled upon this film through social media, and being an avid horror fan of all genres, it definitely caught my interest!  I will say that it has all the makings of what you would expect from this type of film: cheesy one-liners, ridiculous characters, gratuitous nudity, and lots and lots of gore!

The shining star in the film is the demon Knucklebones himself.  He has the relentless brutality of Leatherface, the invincible likeness of Jason Voorhees, and the sadistic sense of humor of Freddy Krueger.  The gory special effects are pretty impressive and creative, to say the least.  One kill scene in particular definitely pays homage to an extreme kill in the Friday the 13th franchise that left me laughing and squirming at the same time!

Overall, I would say that I really enjoyed it.  Just take it for what it is, grab some popcorn, and get ready for bloody good time!

All Through the House

watch-now-on-amazon-instant-video  buyamazon-1

“If you don’t watch out, he’ll make you shout…or better yet, scream for your life!”

Horror is usually attributed to the Halloween season, especially horror films.  There is a sub-genre, however, that sometimes gets overshadowed.  The Christmas slasher film is a well known category of horror flicks.  With classics such as Black Christmas and Silent Night Deadly Night, or the more recent Krampus, it really holds up due to a strong cult following.  At the RIP film festival on Halloween of 2015, another entry was unleashed.  That film is the soon to be cult classic, All Through the House!  Written and directed by the talented Todd Nunes and produced by the Readmond company, the film is the recipient of multiple awards from various film festivals such as Best Director, Best Actress, Best Slasher, and Audience Choice.

THE PLOT

Rachel Kimmel (Ashley Mary Nunes) has returned home from college for Christmas break, but things are a little uneasy.  The neighborhood is still a dark place since the disappearance of five year old Jamie Garrett fifteen years earlier.  As Rachel gets reacquainted with her grandmother, Abby (Cathy Garrett), she reads a card from Mrs. Garrett (Melynda Kiring) asking if Rachel could help with decorating her home for Christmas.  Out of sympathy, she agrees to do so after she goes shopping with her friends.  Upon returning, Rachel and her friends, Gia (Natalie Montera) and Sarah (Danica Riner), see Mrs. Garrett off for a few hours so they can get to work.

Little do they know, their night of innocent fun is about to take a turn for the worse.  A sadistic killer (Lito Velasco), dressed in a sinister looking mask and Santa Claus suit, has been slowly stalking the neighborhood leaving nothing but a bloody trail of bodies behind…and the Garrett house is his next target! As the girls look around the home, it becomes clear that Mrs. Garrett is a very troubled woman and has some dark secrets of her own.  Rachel also quickly discovers that there is more to the story than she and everyone else ever knew!

SHOULD YOU SEE IT?

This was a pretty cool movie, but it may not be for everyone.  If you’re looking for a creepy supernatural or paranormal found footage type movie (which is all the rage lately), then you may wanna look elsewhere.  If you LOVE 80’s style slasher flicks such as Friday the 13th, Sleepaway Camp, and Halloween, then this is right up your alley!  It’s got all the great ingredients for such a film…blood, boobs, cheese, and dark humor!  A special bonus is the great special effects that are included.  Brought to us by Tommy Pietch and Josh McCarron, the film contains some gruesome and bloody images that are sure to satisfy the most ravenous gore hounds! Great Holiday Flick!

“It’s an unpredictable gore fest filled with holiday cheer and unadulterated horror!” – Horror Society

Halloween

watch-now-on-amazon-instant-video   buyamazon-1

“Just when they thought the boogeyman wasn’t real….he came home to prove them wrong!”

Slasher films were all the rage in the late 70’s and early 80’s, and no one can deny that the one that stands out the most is probably the 1978 classic Halloween!  Written and directed by legendary filmmaker John Carpenter, this movie has stood the test of time as one of the best and most successful independent horror films of all time.  Created with a very thin budget of 300K, this iconic masterpiece was a vision that almost didn’t happen due to funding.  Originally titled The Babysitter Murders, it was recommended by producer Irwin Yablans to give the movie a “holiday” theme, and nothing was more fitting than the scariest night of the year…Halloween!

THE PLOT

On the eve of Halloween in 1978, psychiatrist Dr. Sam Loomis (Donald Pleasance) along with his nurse assistant, is on his way to an Illinois sanitarium to pick up his longtime patient, Michael Myers (Nick Castle) and prepare him for his meeting with a judge to determine his future prison sentence.  Fifteen years prior to this night, a 6 year old Michael shockingly murdered his older sister for reasons unknown.  Dr. Loomis has spent all these years trying to make sense of Michael’s actions, but due to his emotionless silence there seems to be no hope for rehabilitation. As they approach the hospital gates, they’re startled to see that many of the other patients are wandering around unsupervised.  As Dr. Loomis exits the car to find out what’s going on, the nurse is attacked and “carjacked”.  This carjacker is none other than Michael Myers, and now Loomis is panicked knowing that the “evil” has escaped, and is convinced that there is only one place he is headed…..home to Haddonfield!

The next day (Halloween), in Haddonfield, the small town is getting ready for what they think is another exciting night of tricks and treats. Teenage shy girl, Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis) and her group of wild friends are preparing for a night of babysitting, drinking, and boys.  Little do they know that they are all in for a long night of blood filled terror, as the “boogeyman” is coming home!  When Dr. Loomis makes his way into town, he quickly alerts the authorities that “evil” has come to town and there may be nothing that can stop him!  As night begins to fall, Laurie and her friends quickly go from having fun to fighting for survival as Michael Myers silently stalks and slashes his way through them all one by one!

SHOULD YOU SEE IT?

This film has become a staple for the slasher genre and a yearly tradition for movie watchers (myself included).  It’s a great popcorn flick, with plenty of tense moments and well timed jump scares. The cast is pretty great, and this is the first feature film for the “Scream Queen” herself, Jamie Lee Curtis.   Throw in a great soundtrack, including the easily recognizable theme song, it makes for a fun and spooky film that will live on for many generations to come.  The boogeyman is coming…and he’s gonna get you!

Hatchet

watch-now-on-amazon-instant-video  buyamazon-1

“A great old fashioned slasher flick, that’s gallons of bloody fun!”

If you’re a fan of old school 80’s style splatter films, then look no further.  Paying tribute to the slasher flicks that we have all come to know and love, comes 2006’s Hatchet.  Written and directed by Adam Green (Frozen, the ski-lift thriller), Hatchet has enough blood, guts, gore, and 80’s campy cheese to entertain any horror movie fan!

THE PLOT

Set in the good ole’ Louisiana bayou, the film follows Ben (Joel David Moore) and his best friend Marcus (Deon Richmond) who are celebrating Mardi Gras in an attempt to cheer up Ben since his recent breakup.  In an attempt to think outside the box, they decide to go on a haunted swamp tour.  Accompanied by an oddball group of tourists, the trip quickly takes a turn for the worse when their inexperienced tour guide crashes the boat and leaves them all stranded in the swamplands.  Now they are about to face an even bigger problem…Victor Crowley (Kane Hodder).  Thought to be just a local legend, Crowley, a deformed and tormented man, wanders the swamps looking for his father and killing anyone who dares to set foot on his territory.  As the night progresses, the lost and terrified tourists have to rely on each other in order to try to survive Victor Crowley’s gruesome and bloody rampage!

SHOULD YOU SEE IT?

This film is a nice and refreshing splatter film, with enough humor to keep it more than just a gore-fest.  Director Adam Green’s “No CGI rule” makes this movie even more fun, because it relies on the old fashioned practical effects that have become a bit lost in today’s horror films.  Special effects artist John Carl Buechler, whose work includes Goulies, Friday the 13th Part VII, Nightmare on Elm Street 4, and Halloween 4, does a great job here! One kill scene in particular really stands out to me as one of the most brutal deaths I’ve ever seen in a movie.  Kane Hodder  himself told me that it was his favorite kill that he’s filmed!  Decent acting, great special effects, hilarious dark humor, and a few horror icon cameos make Hatchet a bloody good time!

The Texas Chain Saw Massacre

watch-now-on-amazon-instant-video   buyamazon-1

“The sound of a chainsaw can be spine tingling….the power of a chainsaw can be spine splitting!”

A simple drive through a rural area of Texas leads to a horrific nightmare for all those involved in the iconic horror classic, 1974’s The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.   Written and directed by Tobe Hooper (Eaten Alive, Poltergeist) and co-written by Kim Henkel, the film is considered by many to be the “pioneer” of what has become known as the “slasher” genre of horror.  Not only is the film terrifying, but it is widely known to be one of the toughest movies to be filmed.  Shot with a low budget and filmed in the relentless heat of the Texas summer, the actors had to endure grueling conditions during the six week filming period.  Being a Texas native myself, I can totally empathize with the cast on that one!

THE PLOT

The story follows young Sally Hardesty (Marilyn Burns) and her wheelchair-bound brother Franklin (Paul A. Partain) as they travel to a recently vandalized rural cemetery where their grandfather is buried, out of concern that his gravesite has been vandalized as well.  Accompanied by Sally’s boyfriend Jerry (Allen Danziger), her best friend Pam (Teri McMinn), and Pam’s boyfriend Kirk (William Vail), the group has no idea of the horror that’s in store for them.  After discovering that the grave is untouched, the group decides that since they’re in the area, they’ll check out Sally and Franklin’s old family home, which is now abandoned.

Along the way, they notice a strange looking man trying to thumb a ride.  Although reluctant, they decide to pick him up out of sympathy due to the terrible heat outside.  What follows is a very strange and chaotic scene that ends with the group quickly giving him the boot.  As they stop for gas and food a little way down the road, they discover that the weird hitchhiker (Edwin Neal) has somewhat “marked” the van.  While they have stopped, they meet the shop owner (Jim Siedow) and are warned that they shouldn’t be messing around that area, being that they are strangers in a not so friendly place.  When they finally arrive at the old home, little do they know that in a nearby farmhouse lies a dark and evil secret guarded by the deranged chainsaw wielding maniac, Leatherface (Gunnar Hansen)!  An innocent drive soon turns into a rollercoaster of tension and terror, with fear and a fight for survival being taken to a whole new level.

SHOULD YOU SEE IT?

Loosely based on the real life story of Ed Gein, the notorious Wisconsin murderer, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre is a classic and pretty terrifying movie.  Relying on gritty camerawork, shocking imagery, very believable acting from the cast, and almost no gore, it still stands today as one of the most iconic horror movies of all time.  Labeled as the 2nd scariest film ever made (The Exorcist – 1st) by Entertainment Weekly, it really tests the viewing audience’s nerves and fear tolerance.  Being a Texan myself, and one who was definitely affected by the film, I’ll always feel a little uneasy by the sound of a chainsaw firing up!

A Nightmare on Elm Street

watch-now-on-amazon-instant-video   buyamazon-1

“Insomnia can be an unhealthy condition, but in some cases….it just might save your life!”

By the time the 80’s rolled around, the slasher genre was starting to fizzle out.  Just when it looked like all hope was gone, 1984 saw the birth of one of the most iconic horror films of all time in A Nightmare on Elm Street!  Written and directed by horror master Wes Craven (The Last House on the Left, The Hills Have Eyes, Scream), the film still stands strong to this day as one of the most frightening and impactful horror franchises in existence.  Inspired by real documented deaths of sleep deprived people unexplainably dying in their sleep, Craven took this intriguing event and turned it into something that everyone can relate to.  We all have nightmares, and he gave it a name…Freddy!

THE PLOT

Set in 1981 suburbia, the film follows a group of teenage friends that all seem to be having the same problem…their nightmares!  While some of them try to shrug it off simply as a bad dream, Tina (Amanda Wyss) seems to be the most troubled by it.  So much so, that she asks her best friend Nancy (Heather Langenkamp) to come stay with her while her mother is out of town.  Along with Nancy’s boyfriend Glen (Johnny Depp) and Tina’s bad-boy boyfriend Rod (Jsu Garcia), they all try to ease Tina’s mind and assure her that there’s nothing to be afraid of.  Boy, are they wrong!  As night falls and everyone falls asleep, Tina’s nightmare starts again as she is being hunted by the burned, razor gloved dream demon Freddy Krueger, brilliantly played by legendary actor Robert Englund!

As the days pass, it seems like there is nothing that can stop Freddy’s dream stalking as he starts to pick off the teens one by one.  While Nancy tries to survive by keeping herself awake, she starts to put the pieces together learning that there seems to be a connection between their parents and Freddy’s past.  In turn, she discovers that Freddy has a motive, and not just a thirst for random teenage blood!  Now it’s up to Nancy to find some way to stop Freddy, before she too falls victim to his glove.

SHOULD YOU SEE IT?

A Nightmare on Elm Street is easily my favorite (and first) horror movie of all time.  It truly terrified me and caused me to have VERY vivid nightmares of Freddy stalking and killing me in the exact ways as the victims of the movie. I still feel that the scene with Tina and Freddy in her alley is the scariest horror sequence I’ve ever watched. This film is the very reason why I love horror movies as much as I do, so I may be a little biased with this one.  Recently meeting the cast was a dream come true for me, and I’ll never forget it.  The recent passing of Mr. Craven definitely impacted me as well as millions of fans around the world.  He created something so special and gave us one of the most iconic characters in pop culture…Freddy Krueger. Even the non-horror fans know his name, and we all recognize these words: “Whatever you do…DON’T FALL ASLEEP!”
